Wednes­day, Sep­tem­ber 23rd, 2026 — Are you a Mar­i­on home­own­er with a leak­ing roof, HVAC unit on the fritz, or elec­tri­cal sys­tem that needs upgrad­ed? Does your show­er or toi­let need to be mod­i­fied for wheel­chair access? Have you delayed address­ing impor­tant home repairs because it is too expen­sive or too dif­fi­cult to find con­trac­tors? Do you wor­ry that some­thing cat­a­stroph­ic will hap­pen to your house if you do not address these home repairs? Do you care for some­one with severe home repair needs? Or do you your­self have a sto­ry to tell about blight in your neigh­bor­hood, the chal­lenges of home­own­er­ship main­te­nance, or the haz­ards of liv­ing in a house in disrepair? 

For the past two years, the City of Mar­i­on has run the Mar­i­on Home Repair Assis­tance Pro­gram, serv­ing around 20 home­own­ers annu­al­ly with minor home repairs – address­ing leak­ing roofs, bro­ken win­dows, and bro­ken gut­ters. To con­tin­ue assist­ing home­own­ers with minor repairs as well as expand­ing assis­tance to home­own­ers to cov­er major repairs (roof and HVAC replace­ment, elec­tri­cal upgrades, and inte­ri­or acces­si­bil­i­ty mod­i­fi­ca­tions), the City of Mar­i­on is seek­ing $350,000 in fund­ing from the Office of Com­mu­ni­ty and Rur­al Affairs. If suc­cess­ful, this fund­ing will expand the exist­ing pro­gram and allow the city to triple its impact on Mar­i­on homeowners. 

The City of Mar­i­on wants to hear your sto­ry. In Octo­ber, the City will host a Com­mu­ni­ty Feed­back Ses­sion to dis­cuss the Mar­i­on Home Repair Assis­tance Pro­gram: its his­to­ry, its present, the need for home repair assis­tance, and the tes­ti­mo­ni­als of Mar­i­on home­own­ers and com­mu­ni­ty members.
