Public Invited: Kennedy Art Center ''Making a Garden of Strange Fruit'' Exhibition Feb 21
Marion, IN- Kennedy Art Center is pleased to announce an upcoming art exhibition and opening reception for the public at the Kennedy Art Center on February 21st from 7:00-9:00 pm. We invite you to come and experience the impactful exhibition entitled Making a Garden of Strange Fruit: an installation intended to prototype a site of remembrance and contemplation acknowledging the 1930 lynching of James Cameron, Thomas Shipp, and Abraham S. Smith. In partnering with Sam Jones and his team, we hope to bring awareness and healing to a time in Marion’s history not often discussed but important to acknowledge. Strange Fruit is a part of the Marion Legacy project (marionlegacy.org) and will feature the work previously displayed at the 2023 Chicago Architecture Biennial: THIS IS A REHEARSAL at the Chicago Cultural Center. The installation was created by Marion-born artist Samuel Levi Jones and his collaborators LAA Office and Sam Van Aken. It features large-scale perforated metal screens reminiscent of patterns within Jones’ own work, which reinvents historical material to create pieces that examine the power structures of our society. The exhibition also features smaller plans and pieces that work towards the Marion Legacy project’s main goal: a permanent site within Marion’s downtown area. We are grateful and honored to be able to display the work within the same area that it is meant to some day inhabit. The public is welcome. The exhibit will be on display through the month of April. Please see below for the opening reception information. WHO: The public is welcome WHEN: February 21st, 2025, 7:00-9:00 pm WHERE: Kennedy Art Center, 326 S. Washington St. Marion, IN 46952
